How to Prepare Your RV for a Safe and Enjoyable Road Trip

There’s nothing like the freedom of the open road in your RV—but preparation is key to keeping the adventure stress-free. Whether you're heading out for a weekend getaway or a cross-country expedition, here’s how to get your RV ready for the journey.

 1. Inspect Tires & Brakes

  • Check tire pressure and tread depth.

  • Look for signs of dry rot or cracking.

  • Test brake responsiveness and check for wear.

 2. Test All Lights & Signals

  • Make sure all exterior lights (brake, turn signals, headlights) are functioning.

  • Check interior lights for camping convenience.

3. Top Off All Fluids

  • Engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer should be full.

  • Don’t forget the generator—check and top up its oil too.

4. Check the Water Systems

  • Run water through taps to check pressure and leaks.

  • Inspect grey, black, and fresh water tanks.

  • Sanitize the freshwater system if needed.

5. Test Appliances

  • Make sure the fridge, stove, microwave, furnace, and A/C are working.

  • Schedule repairs or replacements ahead of time if needed.

6. Secure the Interior

  • Lock cabinet doors and drawers.

  • Secure loose items and tie down movable furniture.

  • Retract awnings and slide-outs before hitting the road.

7. Build Your Emergency Kit

Include essentials like:

  • First-aid kit

  • Jumper cables

  • Flashlight and batteries

  • Basic tool kit

  • Water and non-perishable snacks
